General education courses help students broaden their knowledge and skills beyond the major, and develop the capacities necessary to participate fully in the workplace, a diverse society and an interconnected world. The university believes that general education is of equal importance as the education you receive in your major for your future success as an informed, empowered and responsible individual.

Cal Poly Pomona gives freshman students two options to satisfy lower division GE requirements. Students should consult an advisor on choice of a general education pattern appropriate for their major.

The traditional General Education pattern offers introductory classes in a wide range of disciplines. Students gain exposure to a variety of academic areas and teaching styles.

The Interdisciplinary General Education pattern provides an integrated, thematic approach to learning about writing, humanities and the social sciences. IGE classes are discussion and team-work based, creating a learning community that challenges students to connect personal experience with course materials, to explore their values and goals, and to develop their own ideas and interpretations.

Upper division General Education Synthesis courses offer students an opportunity to integrate and apply their lower division GE learning.
